“File refers to the data between the last byte of the file and just the end of the cluster. It usually contains all of the bit patterns that the operating system uses to denote unallocated memory.

Disk refers to Slack for clusters that have been deallocated but not overwritten. It may also appear as unallocated space, which is no longer divided within a partition boundary.

“RAM Slack” – I’ve never heard that promise before. Googling all the tools I find seems to be worth it or taken from an authoritative book: “Cyber ​​Forensics: A Field Guide to Gathering, Examining, and Preserving Evidence in Computer Crime” by Albert J. Marcell Jr. and Doug Menendez.

I have read every one of our chapters where this term might be used. Although it was copyrighted around 2010, it definitely refers to Rambytes I willt run DOS and Windows 95/98. Windows stores hard drives on disk as clusters. The collection usually contains 8 sectors, each of which combines 512 bytes, i.e. 4096 bytes or 4 KB.

This is true for older discs, for example, as well as for “extended format” 4K discs. The segment size is indeed 4 KB on “native” 4K drives. So there is a last 1:1 correlation between sectors and groups for these drives.

Large pieces of music are split into several groups because the rest of the file cannot fill the entire group, the remaining unused free space at the end of the group is called a “free file”.

Windows always writes blocks of 512 bytes at a time, so the first partially used sector must always be filled before it is compiled to disk.

This is incorrect. Windows doesn’t write in blocks; only gruppy. It writes data of any individual size, but its size is a multiple of the cluster size (usually 4 KB). The only time Windows cares about sectors/blocks is when it needs to calculate wonderful LBA addresses. This is done by the low-level disk driver, actually the file system driver. It’s actually very inefficient to read/write blocks of 512 bytes. This works against the disk’s internal hardware caches. The final dd under Linux with a block size of 512 bytes confirms this. This is an order of magnitude slower when scanning and writing.

For some reason, Windows decides to select a different sequence in RAM to fill this skill area.

Also wrong. Windows writes regardless of the contents of the buffer. Every application update (including the file system driver) allocates new memory from the heap, even if it writes to the output buffer. When a good new app allocates memory, it can do so on pages that will be (guess what!) 4K. Unallocated memory is usually represented by this repetitive bit patternone (not 00 to FF). So it may well be written to the end connected to the cluster if it is not completely full. In cases where the application’s capability buffer is a modified copy of its input buffer, the field also contains any data contained in the input constraint.

The rest of the unused

sectors in the partially selected cluster remain unchanged and keep whatever bytes they had previously that would likely be part of the previously deleted file at that location. This is called a disk buffer.

Also wrong. Windows will probably still do a full cluster commit even if there is only one byte of different data. Is it true that detached clusters contain all the data that previously seemed to be there? Windows doesn’t care about rolling back unallocated clusters. None of this happens at the category level.

4KB is the magic number. RAM is 4 KB. I/O buffers increased to 4 KB. Sectors are now 4 KB in size. Even often, drive hardware is designed to optimize4 KB I/O requests (or several).

Thus, all modern operating systems perform well (Windows, Linux and OS X). The only exceptions to the above rules are applications where the hard drive is exposed to unwanted access. They completely bypass their operating system’s API calls for a corporate record. You only see a few of these in low-level recovery and specialized forensic tools because those applications don’t get all the optimizations people with buffered I/O get.

The only solution I know of is BadMem (by Rick van Rijn), which is capable of blocking bad memory sectors in Linux.

This works by telling the kernel to lock memory addresses. This effectively prevents Linux from accessing these addresses when allocating (and freeing) memory.
